International Conference on Regional and local development


In the organization of the Ministry of Local Self-Government, in cooperation with GIZ, Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation and UNDP, an international conference on the topic: "Challenges and perspectives in the regional and local development - Decentralization and EU accession" is organized today and tomorrow in Skopje. The conference was opened by the Minister of Local Self-Government, Mr.Lirim Shabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Macedonia, Mr. Musa Xhaferi, President of ZELS, Mr.Koce Trajanovski, UNDP Resident Representative in the Republic of Macedonia, Ms. Louisa Vinton, Deputy Ambassador of Germany in the Republic of Macedonia; Mr.Hans-Helge Zander and the Deputy Director of the Mission at the Swiss Embassy in Republic of Macedonia, Ms. Katarina Stoker.


The Minister of Local Self-Government, Mr. Shabani stressed that the Republic of Macedonia's regional and local development policies builds on the determination for membership in the European Union, as a country that has been implementing the process of decentralization of governence  for almost a decade and creates an ambience for coordinated, integrated and inclusive development. As a priority in the implementation of decentralization, Shabani pointed out the fiscal decentralization and the need to equalize local services for all citizens.


Representatives of international organizations, UNDP, GIZ and SDC stressed that the Conference is a good opportunity to exchange opinions and ideas on decentralization, as well as local and regional development with representatives from the country and the region.

From the experts and representatives of the competent institutions, during the Conference will be presented the experiences of the countries from the region in implementing the policies for regional and local development, decentralization and EU accession.
